Barcelona CityAI winter applied AI event

The conclusion of the first event was to never underestimate the enthusiasm around working events. What it had to be finished at 20:30 ended at 21:30. The moderator can’t stop audience asking questions and Spaces was so kind to let us stay until so late a very promising first event.

We learned that Barcelona has top companies doing AI but also great influencers that can help boosting the AI ecosystem in the city. We learned different strategies from diverse companies. Satellogic, a startup with huge challenges and fully engaged in computer vision to solve them.

“Project success : 5% ML algorithm and algorithm parameters selection, 95% really understanding what the client needs

Albert Pujol, satellogic

Cetaqua, part of Suez Environment (with nearly 100k employees) exploring computer vision for gaining efficiency and safety in their operations. Small projects that have to be very scalable and with a clear ROI that we are sure they will find it.

“Show me the ROI. We’re asked to do applied research which delivers”

Rafa Gimenez, Cetaqua

Finally, we had Alpha Health from Telefónica a unique company, capable of attract talent to the city like Tarek. They are working hard in building a trustworthy AI with explainable algorithms and ethical treatment of data.

“I want to build this really cool AI/ML application solving problem XYZ: What are your ethical priorities/moral pillars?”

Tarek R. Besold, Alpha health

We also discover that we have a top researcher in ethics and AI policy in the city. Yolanda has a great knowledge to share with us so we invite her to repeat in further events. As Barcelona practitioners we have to know more about her conclusions. Biased technology has being there for ages as we learned from the existence of unsecured car seat belts when automotive industry was full of male engineers.

“Governance for Ethical AI: Multi-stakeholder & interdisciplinary”

Yolanda Lannquist, The Future Society

The speakers kindly share their presentations so have a look to see what they told us. On the second event we will have less presentations and more conversations with AI experts. For this purpose, audience and seats will be limited don’t lose your occasion to learn about applied AI.

“I am the guy that goes to events for drink and food so please if any sponsor wants to get notice write me at barcelona@city.ai”

Juan Luis Rosa, Barcelona CityAI organiser
